Selecting the right location for your game server is an important decision, one that can sometimes cause confusion. Not only are you finding a location ideal for yourself, but you have to consider your teammates and people who will be playing on the server. We make checking your ping times to our network a simple procedure, you can simply download and open our ping program that will ping all of our locations for you. However you can’t determine the pings of for instance the teams you may face in a competitive league, therefore the final decision should be based on several variables.

1) The most important variable is the generalization that if your team pings well to a location there’s a more than likely chance others will as well, assuming you’re playing others in similar regions.

2) Location is an important variable as well, in most cases the closer you are to a location the better your ping will be. However in some cases this is not always a fact, latency/pings is very dependant on routing and if you have a poor route to a server it may result in a higher ping. The good news is, we can usually adjust certain routes to improve poor routing thus resulting in a better ping.

3) Is this location legal to be used in your competitive league? Some leagues have requirements on server locations depending on your division, therefore you wouldn’t be able to use a server located in Dallas for your match in the Atlantic division. Some leagues are different but in most cases the following locations are acceptable for their respective divisions.

Atlantic: Chicago, NYC, and Charlotte
Central: Chicago, and Dallas
Pacific: Los Angeles, and Seattle.

4) Play the law of averages… Being a team means making decisions as a team, select the location where your team’s average combined ping is the best. Sometimes you may be selected to go with that one location because your ping is 5ms, but if your team doesn’t ping well it doesn’t mean this is the ideal location for you.

5) Contact us! We take great pride in our network and work diligently to ensure low latency and smoothness. If you’re experiencing latency issues there are a lot of cases in which we can make adjustments to resolve your issues.
