Maintaining server performance

How many times have you heard people talking about how great a particular server was for the first month or two? One of the most important and misunderstood things is that maintaining your server will help keep your server running at the best possible performance. Spending just a minute or two each week to run some very basic maintenance will help pro-long your servers performance. At moReal we run some of our own performance maintenance relatively often to ensure that our servers are always running in optimal conditions. Despite this routine maintenance that we run it's also a good deal to occasionally run some of your own in order to ensure that your server is running at it's peak.

Log Files
One of the simplest things you can do to maintain server performance is routinely delete all the files within your servers 'logs' folders. These logs are created to record everything that goes on within the server such as kills and so on. Due to the nature of these log files they do tend to build-up rather quickly, as such its important to clean these files out from time to time.

Downloads
As you can see in the screenshot above there is a folder named "Downloads", temporary files are sometimes stored in this folder. Just with log files, it's a good idea to occasionaly clear all the contents in this folder, simply enter this folder and delete all of the files contained within it.

Stay Clean
Delete files you no longer use or need. Remove maps you no longer use, recorded demos, remove configuration files you no longer use either and so on. This clears up disk space from you game install which can have an impact on performance.

Thorough Reboots
We recommend occasionally doing a full server reboot by typing 'rcon exit', this will totally shut down your server and our monitoring device will then start it again fresh. This process may take upwards of 5 minutes however it is considered a full reboot. Simply doing for example rcon _restart will simply restart your server it will not release it from the system memory.

Performance Tickets
If you're experiencing minor performance issues that were not resolved by doing any of the following. Make sure you open a helpdesk ticket so we can investigate this for you nearly 100% of the time we are able to resolve performance problems quickly. As such we also have a ticket type called "Performance Maintenance", simply submit a ticket with this category and provide your IP address. We will go ahead and clear out your log files, fully reboot your server and optimize your game server path.
